James 4:7-10
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
1 Peter 5:7-9
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Our enemy is a enemy is a mighty spiritual being with wisdom and power that exceed ours. So how can we hope to overcome him?
Obviously, only through dependence upon a greater strength and wisdom than we possess. But thank God, we do not have to face this enemy alone. Now that we are "in Christ," and clothed in His authority, we can confront the enemy without fear. That is why James tells us to submit first to God, and Peter says to remain steadfast in the faith; we can resist the devil safely and effectively only from our position in Christ.
The devil cannot overpower us with brute force. His chief weapon is the lie. He seeks to deceive us about God and His plan for us, about sin and its destructive power, about life and its meaning and purpose, about ourselves and the state of our souls. That is why we must fill our minds with the truth, so we may recognize and rebuff his attacks.
As Jesus demonstrated in His encounter with the devil, the true Word of God is an invincible sword that can parry every lying thrust of the enemy. Whatever destructive havoc he wreaks in our lives is due to we give him room to operate by "flirting with the world" and failing to protect ourselves against ungodly influences. Don't give the devil a foothold or chance to operate in your life, finances, etc. Be blessed.
