Easy Believism

Posted 27th October 2011 at 03:07 PM by KatAutumn
Matthew 7:13-14 says the following:

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

I have had this passage used against me more than once. You see, I wasn't always a believer. I believed in high school and as a young adult, but I was wounded nearly beyond repair by people I thought were my brothers and sisters in Christ. My church home abandoned me when I needed them most. That really soured my attitude toward Christians (and, thus, Christianity) for many years.

I would come back and want to do well in God's sight. That would lead me to go to the extreme end of fundamentalist conservatism. I'd try and reject all of the things the fundamentalist conservatives rejected. I wanted to believe in Bible inerrancy and verbal plenary. I would cover my head, wear dresses only, earnestly contend for the faith. The only problem was that I was, apparently, contending for someone else's faith and not my own.

Something was wrong, though. I like wearing blue jeans and I like LGBT people and I don't think Roe vs. Wade should be overturned and I like listening to secular music and dancing. I don't place my faith in the Bible. I want to be like Jesus, not a Pharisee.

It's hard to earnestly contend for the faith when every time you do your faith is called into question. If you don't kneel at the altar of the King James Bible you mustn't be a "true Christian". If you don't hate gays and lesbians or calls transpeople perverts you must hate Jesus, because He clearly preached against all of that. Wait, no He didn't, but Paul did and that makes it Jesus' word by proxy. Or does it?

Easy believism is the notion that if you embrace moderate to liberal views on social and theological issues you're simply trying to get into heaven by the skin of your teeth. You aren't really serious about loving Jesus, you just want a "get out of hell free" card by putting forth as little Christian effort as humanly possible. You want to love the world and pretend to love Jesus, because loving the world is easy, but following Christ is hard.

So what is so hard about being a conservative fundamentalist? Let's see:

1. Don't have an abortion, and condemn those who do, support the practice, or actually perform the abortions or facilitate them (i.e., clinic workers and volunteers and pro-choice activists). Well, that seems pretty simple. Most of the people who fight against this issue are men, who will never be in a position of having an unplanned or even dangerous pregnancy, or women who have already gone through menopause or know beyond a shadow of a doubt abortion wouldn't be their choice.

Seems to me it would be much harder to see someone make a decision you wouldn't make, or even understand why someone would, and extend grace, mercy, love and compassion.

2. Fight against LGBT people and their rights. If you aren't LGBT or have a loved one who is, it's pretty simple to hate that which you don't understand.

3. Put your faith in the Bible and believe it couldn't possibly have any errors or could be misinterpreted or mishandled during a translation. It's easier to believe in God when a book you believe was written literally by Him tells you to. Seems to me it would be harder to have faith in the unseen when no concrete evidence can be offered up.

4. Vote Republican. Voting is pretty simple, really.

5. Hate the poor and condemn those on welfare. After all, Jesus was just kidding when He said to sell all of your belongings and give your money to those who need it more than you do.

Seems to me if anyone is suffering from a case of easy believism it's the conservative folks who sit in their ivory towers and throw snippets of Scripture down from it to prove how right they are on issues that don't even personally affect them. It's much harder to live as Christ instructed us to. It's much easier to call your president a "Kenyan Muslim Marxist" than it is to pray for him, despite your differences of opinions. It's much easier to call those on welfare "a bunch of lazy crackheads" than it is to actually reach out to them. It's much easier to call LGBT people "perverted sodomites" than to bother to get to know any beyond the stereotypes. It's much easier to believe in God when you believe the Bible is the ultimate concrete proof of His existence and that He supernaturally preserved it just for you.

How have you exemplified Christ today? Was it easy or hard?

I'm so sad for your lost. I don't know what you mean when you say you never took to religion? If you or your wife ever at anytime she may have with out you knowing, believed by faith that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for you and that you at one time meant it from your heart, then God heard it and sealed your eternal reservation for a stay in heaven. When you believed by faith at that moment of truth between you and God, you may have or not felt something supernatural, its not by feeling its by Gods grace and your Faith/believing He is God. that He will allow you to spend eternal life with Him, you don't know if your wife had a moment of heart to heart with God and recieved her place with Him. John 3:3,16- Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God. v/16- For God so loved the world (You and your wife), that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. If your heart to heart with God happen and later you continued in sin does not mean you are going to hell, when you know to do better you do better, the old man (your sinful way of life had not understood how to die and let God help the new man (the new man who heart was given to God), help him/her to grow in the understandings and Gods ways statues and judgements to do better or (live for God) in this life (learning a new acknowledgement of the true living God since your heart to heart experience) Its a new way of living that has to be taught it does not happen over night and it is learned and taught by reading Gods Holy word (Holy Bible) allowing His guidance by His Holy Spirit and developing a true relationship with the True GOD by spending private time praising Him, reading about Him and talking to Him as real as I am writing this to you by His Guidance. He is real He is alive He is love He can reveal His truth and love to you and did before your wife passed, we can only hope that she said yes and is now with Him pain free. If she said yes (and if you will say yes to God through Jesus) then Gods word tells us in Romans 8:38,39/For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, v/39- Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of GOD, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. So Sharief it is up to you to believe by faith that God exists through His only son Jesus, if your wife did and not tell you and you don't, you won't see her after this life. Mark1:15- The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, believe the gospel, Mark12:30- And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first comandment. Mark 13:31,33- Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my (God/Jesus) words shall not pass away. v/33- Take you Heed, watch and pray: for you know not when the time is. Sharief we all need Gods teachings its His word (the way of life) in the Holy Bible Luke 4:4- It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of GOD. I weep with you in your pain for your wife, Jesus can help you through this, 1 John 4:15- Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God, (God will come to be with you.) 1 John 5:4,5,7,13,14, - For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our FAITH. Who is he that overcometh the world (its pains and problems/hardship), but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father(GOD), the word(JESUS/GOD), and the Holy Ghost(The comforter from GOD): and these three are one. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God (Jesus). And this is the Confidence that we have in Him (God/Jesus) that, if we ASK any thing according to His will, He heareth us. Sharief have faith and believe now. Hebrews 11:1- NOW FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. May God keep you and bless you I pray for God to reveal His love to you. As each day approaches God will never leave or forsake you, please find a church that believe the entire bible, that welcomes all race and gender.

Much love I send to you keeping you in my prayers
