South Africa: Week 11 & Final

Posted 16th August 2008 at 04:42 AM by AngCath
Monday was my final full day at the College of the Transfiguration. That, though, makes it sound as though something different happened. It was a normal day. Eucharist in the early morning, classes, meals, etc. The only real change in pace for me was that in the afternoon my Formation Group and two others decided to have a volleyball tournament. Playing a sport with the COTT students was interesting. Rules and order are much less valued than in all my experience playing sports in the US. Though...

Week 10

Posted 16th August 2008 at 04:41 AM by AngCath
This week was week #3 at the College of the Transfiguration. On Wednesday, the Feast of the Transfiguration, the Contextual Theology students had a nice presentation by William Domeris, the Rector of COTT on the Old Testament and poverty. He spent 10 years researching for his book, Touching the Heart of God, and spent some time on an archeological dig in Israel as well.
That same afternoon, Therese and I went out to a goat farm of one of the cathedral parishioners. It is shearing time and...

Cathedral Farewell Sermon

Posted 16th August 2008 at 04:41 AM by AngCath
Sermon: Proper 13A – Matthew 14.13-21

Today marks the beginning of my tenth week in Grahamstown and as a part of the St. Michael and St. George community. Therese and I can’t tell you just how deeply our time here has touched us both. You have welcomed us into your homes. You have allowed us to be a part of your daily lives and your worship life. In the midst of an otherwise hectic life that defines the life of an ordinand and family, you have given us a special gift this winter. You...

Week 9

Posted 16th August 2008 at 04:40 AM by AngCath
Last Sunday, we went to worship with the Holy Cross brothers just outside town. It was probably the best service I've been to in ZA. They use their own "monastery rite" which is a blend of An Anglican Prayer Book 1989, The Book of Common Prayer 1979, and local adaptations in local languages. They successfully blended languages and cultural styles in a way I've never seen before. It was a joyous service and the brothers are all wonderful. I look forward to my three day retreat at the monastery...

Week 8

Posted 31st July 2008 at 12:41 AM by AngCath
Sunday was a day of transitions. After church services and tea time, Steve and I very quickly went over our proposals for the cathedral with the dean, Andrew Hunter. He seemed to be agreeable to most of what we had to say, but also was quite clear we needed to do it or it may not get done. This may prove to be the problem since we are both engaged in the Contextual Theology Programee at the College of the Transfiguration. But, I'm getting ahead of myself.
That afternoon, Steve moved out of...
