Calvinism - Learning More

Anyone with even a casual participation in some of the CF forums, will readily see how many folks have a less than informed view of Calvinism. A great deal of posts related to the doctrines of grace are spent correcting these misunderstandings.

For anyone wanting to know more about Reformed theology I recommend the following three inexpensive books by R.C. Sproul, who has a distinctive way of explaining complex topics in easily understood style:

Begging the Question in Dialog

How many times have we encountered the response or rejoinder that in our discussions we are begging the question?

Yet, I maintain that there is no defect of reasoning called "begging the question" aside from a certain prohibited move in the academic game of elenchus.

"A, therefore A" is deductively valid.

Another interesting one..

God has all the virtues.
Therefore, God is benevolent.

Calvinism is a system of beliefs based upon Scriptural interpretation of the doctrines of grace. The Canons of Dordt is where the Calvinistic acrostic, TULIP was first articulated, many years after the death of John Calvin, one of the great theologians of the past who systematized Reformed doctrines.

That which is called "Calvinism" is usually assumed to be simply belief in the five points articulated by the Canons of Dordt. It is much more than this, but the TULIP acrostic...

No Neutral Ground Between the Believer and the Non-Believer

Van Til eschewed any apologetic that would end up proving a god exists, for this would be denying the Scriptures and their teachings that the unbeliever can even be met on a common ground, for the unbeliever is wholly at enmity with God. Van Til also believed strongly that Christian theism is a unit, and any apologetic that compromised the unity of Christianity was a faulty apologetic.
